In chapter 8 Huck and Jim run into each other. Huck says that people will call him a "low down Ablitionist and dispise me for keeping mum" in reference to Jim running away. Explain what it means to be an Abolitionist. Why is it Huck is concerned about being called one? You'll have consider both the time period and the setting of the novel to answer the question.
- Abolitionist means a person who favors the abolition of a practice or institution, especially capital punishment or slavery.
- At that time, the slave was legal and most every house have slave to working in the farm. Huck was afraid to called Abolitionist because he was with Jim when Jim just escaped. If people see that, they will think Huck helping Jim to get away from slave.

- King Solomon had two women claiming a baby as there own, but he didn't know which woman is the real mother. So he sent a sword and said that the baby would be cut in to half and each woman could have. One woman agreed and the other woman asked King Solomon to spare the child's life and just give the baby to woman that agreed. King Solomon said the second woman is the real mother of baby because mother would do anything to save the baby. Jim interprets the story differently because he think that save the baby is more important.
When Jim wakes up after their separation in the fog, what does Jim's reaction to Huck's Joke tell us about him? How do you feel about Jim at this point?
- It tells us Jim cares about Huck because Jim worried about Huck.
Jim is very superstitious. From a historical standpoint, why do you think this is?
- At that time, the slaves are not educated, so the superstition was way to he can explain.
"It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger - but i done it, and I warn't ever sorry for it afterwards, neither." What does this line tell us about Huck?
- Huck was afraid to talk to Jim because he worried to portray as an abolitionist. But now, Huck is changing. He care about Jim and he apologized to Jim becuase Huck doen't see Jim as slave anymore.
At the end of chapter 16 Huck is struggling with giving Jim up. Outline the battle that he has with himself, and explain his actions when the men come up looking for the 5 escaped slaves.
- He decides to lie and keep Jim.
Chapter 17-21
Describe the Grangerford family (Chapter 17-21)
- Grangerford family is wealthy and nice. They may seems respectable, but they live in a wrold of fear and hate.
Mark Twain alludes that the feud between the Grangerford and the Shephersons is about traditional feuds between farmer ("granger") and rancher ("shepherd"). Why would he write this into the novel? What does it say about these two occupations at this time (Chapter 18) ?
- I think he write this into the novel because people thought farmer and rancher is not that different. And because of it, there were rivalries between farmers and ranchers at that time.
Toward the end of chapter 18 Huck says "I don't want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I'll cut it pretty short." Huck says this prior to telling us about the big battle. How does our narrator's perspective play a role in what we think and feel reading this section (Chapter 18)?
- Huck was mad because Buck got into the gun fight and lost him. Huck want to forget what happened so he doesn't want to talk about it.
Explain who the King and Duke are. Why does Huck go along with their story (Chapter 19)?
- One man introduced himself that he is the Duke of Bridge water and the other man said he is Dauphin that the son of King Louis XVI. Huck realized they are lie to him, but Huck decides to going with them because he doesn't want any trouble and fight.
What problems do you anticipate with the Duke's solution to how they can all run the raft during the day (Chapter 20)?
- People might think Jim is run away slave. And it is breaking the law if slave is not returned to the owner, so they traveling at night only. Since the King and Duke got the raft, the Duke come up with solution which is they can act Jim is captured as run away slave and three of them are taking Jim back to owner.
Illustrate the town that the play will be held in (Chapter 21).
Chapter 22-26
At the very end of chapter 22 we see the handbill that the king and the duke will pass out. The duke says "if that line don't fetch them, I don't know Arkansaw!" Why would the line at the bottom of the handbill work to get people into the play?
- People that read the handbill might curious. And people will come to watch the play to check why women and children are not allowed.
Towards the end of chapter 23 we see this line: "What was the use to tell Jim these warn't real kings and dukes? It wouldn't a done no good; and besides, it was just as I said; you couldn't tell them from the real kind."
a. Why doesn't Huck see the use in telling Jim?
a. Why doesn't Huck see the use in telling Jim?
- Because at that time, the slave didn't get education, so Huck thought Jim doesn't know much about a king and duke, and there is no difference if Jim knows they are not real king and duke.
- I think Huck compares the king and the duke with a real king and duke. because they are not real king and duke, they lying to Huck and they just acting like king and duke.
The final line in chapter 24 reads: "It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race." What is Huck talking about? What does it tell us (the reader) about Huck that he feels this way?
- Huck feels this way because the king and the duke planned about how to look like the brothers of dead man who had lot of money. He ashamed about stealing from downhearted family.
In chapter 25 we meet the doctor. How does the doctor know that the king and the duke are a fraud?
- The doctor know that the king and the duke are a fraud because the doctor notice that their English accent is not good.
The king and the duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the money (chapter 26). Why don't they?
- The king and the duke don't leaving in the middle of the night with the money because they decide to stay to get more money. The duke wanted to leave but the king thought staying with Huck until the land and the slave are sold is better, so they can get more money.
Chapter 27-30
Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period? (Chapter 27)
- The reasons were staying up with dead body was kind of traditional funeral. And they wanted to know make sure the body kept safe.
What do we learn (or reaffirm) about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again in inside of two weeks? (Chapter 28)
- Different than other people, Huck didn't care about race. He just wanted to help people. So he comforts Miss Mary Jane when she upset.
What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were? (Chapter 29)
- Compared the hand writing to the letter that they got.
- They identified the tatoo he had on his chest.

Hcuk says "You can't pray lie." What lie is he trying to pray about? What does he mean? (Chapter 31)
- Huck wants forgiveness about help Jim to escape and he is trying to pary about this. But the pray with lie is not going to be work. Becuase God knows what is the truth.
Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes? (Chapter 31)
- Hcuk was writing about Jim to Miss Watson. And he ripping it up. Becuase he didn't want to make Jim back to slavery.
Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal Jim. He says "Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn't believe it. Tom Sawyer a nigger stealer!" What do you think of this? (Chapter 33)
- I don't believe that Huck was disappointed to Tom. I think Huck surprised that Tom wanted to do it with him, even though it is against the society to help slave escape.
Hcuk says two things at the end of chapter 33:
1. "Human beings can be awful cruel to one another."
2. "But that's always the way: it don't make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person's conscience ain't got no sense, and just goes for him anyway."
What does Huck mean by these two statements?
1. "Human beings can be awful cruel to one another."
2. "But that's always the way: it don't make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person's conscience ain't got no sense, and just goes for him anyway."
What does Huck mean by these two statements?
-
Why are Tom and Huck looking for a more difficult way to break Jim free? (Chapter 34)
- They want more difficult way to break Jim free becuase they like fun and interesting thing for them.
Chapter 36-40
In the process of breaking Jim free, what is Tom's motivation? What is Huck's motivation? (Why are they doing it?)
- I think Tom's want to make this more adventruous and exciting but Huck cares for Jim and he want Jim to be free.
What do Huck and Tom mean when they say they "let on" about something? Why do they do this? (Begins on chapter 37)
Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncle's slave? What are his motivations for this? (Chapter 39)
- Tom write the letter to family without his name to warn them. In the letter, Tom says Jim is going to be stolen and tell them what is the plan to stole. So Huck and Tom would have more time to esscape with Jim.
We've worked a great deal on this novel's satirical elements. How is the planning and plotting of Jim's escape by Tom and Huck satire?
- Huck want simple plan so that Jim escape quick and easy. But Tom making the escape plan more complicated and making it look like there is more things to do. This scene in the book shows satire through Huck and Tom because in today, when somthing happens people exaggerate the truth and make situation bigger and harder.
Towards the end of the chapter Huck says "I knowed he was white inside" about Jim. Why does he say this and what does he mean?
- Jim wanted to save Tom from bullet lodged in Tom's leg. To Huck, Jim is good person, because Jim worry about Tom and want to help Tom, even though he just escape and got free. And Huck says " I knowed he was white inside" becasue, back then, what white people do/think is right things, and Huck thought Jim doing right thing.
Chapter 41-end
Towards the end of chapter 41: "And then when I went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good I felt mean and like I couldn't look her in the face". Why does Huck feel this way?
In chapter 42 we hear the doctor's account of his experience treating Tom: "so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from somewheres, and says he'll help; and he done it too, and done it very well." Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him?
- We learned that Jim is kind and caring person and no matter the race, everyone's life is important.
What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)?
- We learned that Tom want thrill of adventure and he want to be known. He keep trying things because he don't like to feel like a failure.
You've finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck.
- Huck is very independent and adventurous person. Beginning of this book, Huck doing something for himself, but later on, he cares about other people like when he decided to help Jim to escape. Somtimes his action cause negative situation, but he wasn't mean to. I think he is nice person.
